SunFilter is a low cost and easy to use solar-powered water purification solution that brings clean drinking water to rural households in low resource settings. The solution will be piloted with solar-home-system provider BBOXX in Kenya, where today 20 million people rely on unimproved water sources, and approximately 40 percent of hospital attendance is due to preventable diseases related to water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Today, the most prevalent solutions for water purification in Kenya rely on boiling, chlorine, or physical filters. However, these existing solutions have inherent issues which discourage use, including altering the water’s taste, long purification times, and being prohibitively expensive. SunFilter uses low-power UV purification, powered by BBOXX’s off-grid solar system, to deactivate bacteria and viruses in water, and fits onto standard jerry cans, enabling the low cost of this innovative technology. With SunFilter, in a matter of minutes, people living in even the most remote areas can access clean drinking water as easily as turning the tap on a water cooler.
